Diwali, derived from the word "Deepavali" (दीपावली), translates into English as "row of lamps".
Honored by Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, the five day festival has many different legends behind the celebration. Significant to all traditions of the story, is the importance of the victory of good over evil.
Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps (diyas or dīpas) filled with oil signifying the triumph of good over evil and movement from darkness into light.
During Diwali, all those celebrating wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends.
This weekend, Diwali comes to London, lighting up Trafalgar Square in traditional Indian style, with displays and food stalls catering to all tastes.
Diwali on the Square will transform Trafalgar Square with vibrant celebrations, including light displays, colourful Diwali decorations, prayers for peace along with live music and traditional dance.
